Macular Degeneration

What is macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration is damage or deterioration of the central area of the retina. The macula permits one to see small details and color; however, when the macula deteriorates, vision becomes blurry affecting near-sightedness and far-sightedness. Consequently, reading fine print may become critically impossible.

What causes macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration can be the result of aging, smoking, and sometimes genetics.

What can BHMG do to help macular degeneration?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for macular degeneration. However, if symptoms are detected at an early stage, laser treatment or non-invasive treatments can prevent the process of degeneration from occurring at a rapid pace. There are two macular degneration: dry (non-neovascular) and wet (neovascular).

The dry process is more common and progresses slowly. There is no surgical treatment but rather a form of vitamin therapy. Although the condition cannot be cured or reversed, most patients can retain useful vision with the help of vision aids.

Individuals who experience wet macular degeneration undergo severe changes in their vision quickly. In this case, specialists can use laser surgery or medications to prevent drastic retinal damages.
