What is
Percutaneous Balloon Dilation?
Balloon dilatation is a new therapeutic
technique that physically disrupts BPH-induced
urinary obstruction without requiring surgery.

Effects
of Percutaneous Balloon Dilation
Balloon dilation is helpful in managing the
constrictions of blood vessels, esophaguses,
urinary tracts and ureters.

Candidates for Percutaneous Balloon Dilation
The
balloon dilation system is commonly used as the
primary modality to establish percutaneous renal
access. Although safe and effective (83%), the
success rate drops dramatically in patients with
prior ipsilateral renal surgery.

Your Consultation
We
believe that the balloon dilation could be the
first line of treatment for strictures of uro-digestive
anastomosis, except for some patients with a
long stenosis or a previous history of
intrapelvic radiation.

The
Percutaneous Balloon Dilation Procedure
It
involves placing a special catheter into the
prostatic urethra and inflating a balloon at the
end of the catheter. The balloon pushes against
the obstructing tissue and forces open a channel
through which urine can exit the bladder. The
procedure can usually be done on an outpatient
basis under local anesthesia.

Recovery
There
may be some risks associated to anesthesia.

Risks
The
main problem with balloon treatment is its high
failure rate. As many as half the men who have
it done suffer a return of symptoms within a
year; those who make it through the first year
usually do well after that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q:
What is a kidney?
A:
The
kidneys are
bean-shaped
excretory
organs in
vertebrates. Part of the
urinary system, the kidneys filter wastes
(such as
urea) from the
blood and excrete them, along with
water, as
urine.
Q:
Who are the good candidates for balloon
dilatation?
A:
Balloon dilatation is not for everyone,
especially men with very large prostates. It
works well for men with smaller glands or for
those who are medically unfit to undergo a
prostatectomy.
