The
Condition
Wrinkles are described as grooves in the skin that can
appear on the surface or be quite deep in the skin.
As a
person ages, the skin loses its strength and elasticity,
which makes it less supple, causing wrinkles and skin
sagging in the elderly. In addition to aging, exposure to
the sun and smoking are also deemed to be contributing
factors to the development of wrinkles.
Indications that a person has wrinkles include having deeply
formed lines and fine, crinkling crosshatch marks on the
skin. The skin that has wrinkles may appear tough and
leathery, especially if the person has had extreme exposure
to the sun.
The
following are some of the factors that can cause wrinkles:
-
Loss of elasticity
-
Sun damage
-
Repeated facial movements such as frowning
-
Aging

Frequently Asked
Questions
Q:
What are dynamic wrinkles?
A:
Dynamic wrinkles, a term used by physicians, are most
commonly known as smile lines and frown lines. Dynamic
wrinkles are the most troublesome of all wrinkle types and
are difficult to treat. Dynamic wrinkles are also called
crow’s feet, scowl lines, forehead creases and lip
wrinkles. Such wrinkles develop from facial expressions
such as smiles, laughs or frowns. Each time a person does
these expressions, the skin creases or folds in the same
way. After such facial expressions are made from time to
time, the skin “remembers” such creases even though they are
not present. To improve the state of a wrinkled skin, it
has to undergo processes like laser resurfacing,
dermabrasion, deep peeling, BOTOX®
and fillers. But all the same, even after all these
treatments, dynamic wrinkles would still come back since
people would still create the same facial expressions.
Q:
What are fine wrinkles?
A:
Fine wrinkles appear on dry crepe paper skin, usually on the
cheeks. These types of wrinkles are described as
superficial and are relatively easy to remove through care
of the skin, micropeels, and other treatments that are
simple enough to do.
Q:
What are skin fold wrinkles?
A:
Skin fold wrinkles are the type of wrinkles that are seen
from the corner of the nose, around the mouth, and down to
the chin. These wrinkles are similar to big parentheses
around the mouth. Its development is within the skin fold
(called nasolabial fold) which is caused by sagging cheeks.
Since skin fold wrinkles are caused by the sagging of the
skin, the only way to treat them is by tightening the skin,
a process also called a Facelift.
Q: How
do these treatments work?
A:
As a background, the skin is composed of damaged superficial
cells and healthier deep cells. Old superficial cells die
every day and are replaced by younger cells. Upon birth,
the process of shedding a new skin cell would take about 30
days. Meanwhile, upon reaching the age of 60, the process
increases to about 60 days. As a person ages, the
complexion of the skin becomes more dull and lifeless
because the cells on a person’s skin surface gets older.
The
skin care treatments allow healthier deep cells to surface,
resulting in a younger and fresher look. Undergoing skin
treatments will improve the state of some or all of the skin
problems; namely, large pore size, loss of skin vitality,
roughness, discoloration, fine wrinkles, acne scars, dynamic
wrinkles and loss of skin tone.
Though
the wrinkle treatments have their similarities, each of them
works in a slightly different manner. As a result, a person
undergoing a treatment may receive a different degree of
improvement. Further, none of the treatments gives a
solution to all skin problems. As a whole, treatments that
are deeper in nature provide increased improvement, but as
the downside, require a longer recovery time. To achieve
better results, many people make use of two treatment
options that are complimentary to one another. One example
of such a strategy is undergoing laser resurfacing and BOTOX®
injections.
